How to close Skype in Windows 10 and stop it from starting automatically

If you’ve been wondering how to close Skype in Windows 10, you’ve got to the right place. We’re getting into that today, as a lot of users are having issues with that situation.

Skype includes a special version pre-installed desktop version with every Windows 10 computer so you’re ready for your Skype conversation and calling. This version added by Microsoft has some important refurbished features. It follows the modern trend of simple and clean design with zero borders and glyphs icons. Its streamlined interface has also been adopted as a design pattern for other Microsoft team products.

Now, there is an issue with this pre-installed Skype window. It came with no command, menu, or any other option for quitting the app. This has been found highly confusing by many users. The annoying part is, when you’re in a hurry to get things done with your desktop, you switch it on, then boom, the Skype app launches, staring at you like a ghost.

This doesn’t happen just once, either twice. It continually occurs over time. The worst part being when you need to meet a deadline, and it’s there obstructing your movement.

Funny enough, with Skype being owned by Microsoft, you could think that they would work in harmony. Sadly, no. There’s no proper solution to closing Skype in your Windows 10 operating system.

How to close Skype in Windows 10 pc

Above we’ll go through some methods to properly close Skype on a Windows 10 computer.

Method 1

Windows 10 offers a new feature within the taskbar. It is a small bar placed under the taskbar of any running application.

Start by right-clicking the Skype Icon on the notification bar. It brings out the small bar as shown in the image. In the options, select “Sign out”.

This step, however, has proven to work for only signing out from Skype. But it still couldn’t close the program, neither could it stop it from launching itself whenever you switch on your computer.

While closing the app forcefully is possible using Settings or Task Manager, it is not advised. That procedure can be harmful to the app. Terminating the app may reset the settings, corrupting locally stored data and other internal information.

Method 2

You can close Skype using the notification area. The steps are simple:

  • Login to Skype;
  • Select “Sign out” by pressing the three dots menu;

  • Confirm your action by clicking “Yes”.

Method 3

  • In the notification area, right-click on the “^” icon.
  • Then right-click on the Skype Icon – a menu comes up;
  • Select the “Quit” option from the menu.

Now, you have successfully solved the problem of closing the Skype application on your Windows 10 desktop.

We are uncertain why the Skype team made it so difficult to stop the app. Possibly, this was done, having in mind the behavior of Skype UWP app or Store app. When Skype is not in use, or you’re logged off it, the OS hibernates the operation, rendering it inactive. This makes going back to the Skype app prompt, but it’ll cost you an always-running Skype service.

To use the Skype store app instead of the desktop app, open the Microsoft app Store and install Skype.

Why is closing Skype so difficult in Windows 10?

Skype is used by many around the globe, for personal and business purposes. It is uncertain whether Microsoft takes great measures to develop Skype and maintain its popularity. Certainly, there’s a version of Skype present on Windows computers.

Signing into Skype accounts has been made quite easy. One can as well leave the app running in the background while doing other things. But, the difficulty Windows 10 users have encountered is being able to close the Skype app entirely.

Many users have tried right-clicking on the running Skype icon on the Taskbar but find no quit button. Then, trying to close the Skype icon in the title bar only minimizes the app. It keeps running in the background.

It is difficult to understand why the Microsoft Skype team decided to create a non-closable software program. The two options available for shutting down the Skype app are termed long and uncalled for.

The first option is to terminate the Skype processes using the Windows task manager. This is not ideal because it can harm or corrupt the app.

Then, there’s the second one where you can quit the app using the Skype icon in the notification menu. Apparently, this procedure is done only when you’re signed off. It might be convenient for users who don’t sign in regularly.

For regular users, though, it is considered a problem. We don’t know why Microsoft had taken the measure to remove closing options. In our opinion, they find it necessary to keep users logged in.

How to stop Skype from starting automatically Windows 10

It is quite simple to stop Skype from launching automatically on your computer. Skype is built to open automatically by default whenever you start your computer. This is so that you can receive messages, calls, and notifications instantly.

When Skype is disabled during the start-up, you need to manually open it for the first time. Once done, Skype remains open for notifications unless you sign out or shut it down. But how to prevent Skype from opening on startup Windows 10?

There are three ways you can stop Skype from automatically starting. However, they are dependent on how the program was installed. If Skype was obtained from the Microsoft Store, it could not be technically disabled. But you can sign off to shut it down, preventing notifications.

This might not stop the app from launching automatically, but it keeps you logged off. If your Skype was installed through Skype’s official website, auto-launch can be disabled in the auto start feature.

Method 1

  • Click on the “three-dotted menu” located next to your username on the homepage;

  • Select “Settings”;

  • Go to “General” from the Setting’s menu;

  • Now, it takes you to the “Start-up and close page”;

  • Select “Settings”;
  • Find Skype in the list and toggle the “Automatically start Skype” from right to left.

You can now leave the settings screen.

Method 2

  • Using the Task Manager or by pressing Ctrl + Shift + ESC;
  • Then select the “Start-up” tab. If this is not yet shown, click on “More details”;
  • Find the “Skype Icon” in the options given in task manager, then right-click it. When the option shows, select “Disable”, then leave the page.

If the app is already open when you disable the autostart, it keeps running. You can stop this by selecting the Skype icon from your Taskbar and click on “Quit Skype” to close.

Should I let Skype run in the background?

Why is Skype running in the background Windows 10? We all have used Skype at one point in time. Many are still actively using it. It has grown to become an essential part of work and business life. It is an amazing app with interesting features and design.

But there’s that particular feature that reduces its rating. Many Windows 10 users have experienced similar issues. That is because the Skype app keeps running in the background when it is not being used.

Once your computer is logged on, Skype immediately starts in the background and stays active. It keeps you logged in even when you don’t need it. Then, there’s the fact that it sometimes slows all the applications on your computer. Another is that it keeps draining your battery life unnecessarily. It can be so infuriating and frustrating.

On the upside, Skype developers had their reasons for designing it that way. We might not know them, but, on our own, we’ve found it helpful in a way or two.

  • You get to receive calls, messages, and other notifications as soon as you log in to your system;
  • For business emergencies, you can just enter and start working without the need to launch the app first.

Why would I need to stop Skype from running in the background?

Always being available when needed by your contacts is cool. It might seem like a basic necessity for both personal and work life. Sadly, there is a dark side to these perks. The CPU is heavily affected by the continuous running of your Skype app in the background. This is something that shouldn’t be forgotten.

The app drains the battery, deeply consumes your resources even when not in use. You surely wouldn’t enjoy your system like that. That is why it is advised to keep the Skype app running only when you’re using it. Then, switch it off when you’re done with it.

How to prevent Skype from running in the background on Windows 10

You must be looking for ways to stop Skype from running in the background of your computer. It is easy to disable Skype whether you’re using the default or Skype desktop app. You can decide to manually launch the Skype app by using these procedures.

You should know that there are two Skype versions on Windows 10. One comes pre-installed with Windows, while the Skype “classic” is installed can be downloaded from the Skype website. Both start automatically by default, but the disabling process differs in each.

In Windows 10 pre-installed version

  • Open the app settings;
  • Click on the “Privacy tab”;

  • Move to “S” where you find the Skype app. Toggle the button from “On” to “Off”.

With these steps, Skype will successfully be disabled from running in the background.

In the “Classic” Skype app

  • You start by signing into your Skype app and using your keyboard. Press “Ctrl + ,” to get to the “Settings”. You can alternatively click on the “More” button at the upper right corner of the Skype homepage;

  • The page takes you to the “General” tab. On the left-hand side, toggle from right to left and to “Launch Skype in Background”.

How to make Skype open on startup Windows 10

This can be done easily by locating the start-up button. But, before you do this, make a note of each user of the same computer. Here, each user should have their own start-up folder.

This ensures that only the account you need will have that Skype auto start-up when you log in. This is for setting up computers with multiple users. Now, for automatic start-up, there are three ways this can be done.

First procedure

  • Click on the “three-dotted menu” located next to your username on the Skype homepage;

  • Select the “Start-up tab”. If this is not yet shown, click on “more details”;

  • Find “Skype” in the options, then right-click it;
  • When the option comes up, select “enable”, then leave the page.

After this is done, your Skype will start automatically when you log into your computer.

Besides, you can log in automatically to a specific Skype account when the program launches. This can be done by enabling the auto-login feature located on the login page.

Once you enter your preferred account, check the “Sign me in when Skype starts” box. When this is done, you may return to the login page by clicking on the “Sign out” from the “Skype” menu.

How to uninstall Skype from Window 10

There are many methods if you’re willing to remove Skype from Windows 10. But before applying the uninstall option, you need to sign out from Skype.

Veamos:

  • Pulsa la tecla de Windows en tu teclado, la que tiene el logo de Windows;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

How to rename user folder in Windows

In this article, you’ll get to know how to rename user folder in Windows 10. When you buy a new Windows 10 computer, you are required to perform an initial setup. During this setup process, you need to enter a username that will be associated with your PC. This also creates a user folder in the drive where Windows 10 is installed.

Now, during the setup process, if you introduce a wrong username, you would need to change it later on. Even though the process is not as straightforward as renaming any random folder, it can still be done. So, if you’ve been asking how to change user folder name Windows 10, you have come to the right place.

Below, we will take a look at two of the most common methods to do it. The first one involves making a change to the Windows registry by using the Registry Editor (Regedit). This is the most effective method but should be used only as a last resource as it involves some risk.

The second method implies replacing your current account with a new administrator account. Let’s take a look at both of these methods below.

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

Follow the methods below to learn how to create a new user on Windows 10 and consequently find out how to change user name in Windows 10.

Creating a new Administrator account

This method can be considered as sort of a workaround or a “hack”. It entails creating a new local account with the username that you want.

Then you grant it administrator access to your computer, which essentially makes it an administrator account. Then, you remove the same access for your old account.

Let’s take a look at the steps involved in this:

  • Click on the Windows icon at the bottom left corner of your screen by default to open the Start Menu. Then click on the gear icon;
  • This will open up the Settings app on your computer. It allows you to change any preferences regarding the system;
  • In the settings app, you will find a bunch of different options. Click on “Accounts”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • You will now find yourself on the “Accounts” page which has basic information about your user account. You will see the username, the administrator account status, user profile of any other user on your computer, and so on;
  • Next, click on “Family & other users” located on the left sidebar;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • A new page will open up where you will find the details of other family members who share your computer;
  • Now, click on the “Add someone else to this PC” option which is located under “Other users”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • This will open up a small window that will ask you to sign in using an email address or phone number. Since we only need to create a local user account, and not a Microsoft account, you need to select “I don’t have this person’s sign-in information”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • In the following window, you will be prompted to create a new user account. Click on the third option: “Add a user without a Microsoft account”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • Now you will finally be able to create a new user account. In this window, enter the username that you had originally planned to use. Make sure you enter the username correctly this time around. Next, choose a password for this new user account. You will also need to set up the security questions in case you forget your password. Once you are done, click “Next”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • You have successfully created a new user account with your desired username. The same can be seen on the “Family & other users” page. This means that your computer now has an old user and a new user;

  • Next, we need to modify the account type of the new user created. By default, this new account is set to be a standard user. But we need to change it to make it an administrator account. To do this, click on your newly created local account under the “Family & other users” page. This will bring up two options: “Change account type” and “Remove”. Click on the first option;

  • You will now see a new window that will let you change the account type of the new user profile;
  • Click on “Standard user”. Then, select “Administrator”. Next, click “Ok”. Your new account is now set as an administrator account;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • Now, you will have to change your old user account into a standard user. To do this, open up the Control Panel from your desktop;
  • Then, click on “User Accounts”;

  • This will show you the original user account that you had set up. On this page, click on “Change your account type”;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • In the following window, make sure the “Standard” option is selected. Then, click on “Change Account Type”. This will change it to an ordinary local account;

  • To finish, log out and then log in with your new account, and then you will see the new user folder in your C drive (or wherever your Windows OS is installed).

How to change c /users/username in Windows 10 Using Registry Editor

This method can be a little risky as editing the Windows registry can mess up the system if not done properly. However, if you know what you are doing and remain careful throughout the process, you can manage to change your user profile folder name effectively.

This method requires a second local account with administrator access to work. So, you can follow the steps listed above to create a new administrator account. Then, follow the below steps:

  • Log in with the new user profile that you created in the above method. To do this, click on the Windows logo at the bottom left corner of the screen and then on the figure of a person. You will then see your newly created user profile. Click on it to switch to the new account;

  • Next, go to your user folder location. Its default location is usually in the C drive, where you typically find other folders like program files, system files, etc. To navigate to it, open your file explorer, double click on the C: drive, then double click the “Users” folder. You will see your old user folder as well as the new one;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • Now, you need to right-click on your old user folder. Then, click on “Rename” from the menu. Name the user folder anything you want and press “Enter”. Check to see the correctness of the renamed folder and then close the File Explorer;

  • Then, open the Command Prompt app. To do it, press the “Windows + R” keys. Then type “cmd” in the textbox and click on “Ok”.

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • A new Command Line application window will open up. You need to paste the following command there (without the quotes) and press enter: “wmic useraccount get name,SID”;

  • A bunch of codes will appear in front of you corresponding to each Windows user account. You need to note down the SID of the profile folder that you want to rename;
  • Next, press the “Windows + R” keys again, and this time, type “Regedit” in the text box. Then click “Ok”;
  • This will open up the Registry Editor. Copy the following address (without the quotes) and paste it into the address bar of the Registry Editor: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList“;

  • Now, in the left sidebar, you search for the SID that you had noted above. Once found, click on it;

  • Double click on the “ProfileImagePath” registry key from the list. This will allow us to change the” profileimagepath” value. A small window will open up;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • In this small window, you need to enter the new user folder name in the box below “Value data” and then click “OK”. This name should be the same as the one entered in the File Explorer;

How to rename user folder in Windows 10

  • The user account folder is now successfully changed. You can now restart your computer and log in using any of the user accounts. In fact, your new user account name will be visible on the login screen. This further confirms that the change is successful;

Note: Again, to rename user profile folder, only use this second method if the first one doesn’t work for you for some reason. Editing the Windows registry can be quite risky and a single mistake can cause major harm to your system.

Wrap Up

When you set up a new computer, you are asked to create a new user account. While going through this step, most people often choose something random, thinking that they will change it later. They later realize that this is not so easy.

Even though changing the account name is relatively easy, changing the user folder name associated with the account is not that peaceful. There are several workarounds to this and you need to be careful while using them.

The first method is to create a new admin account and then removing administrator access to the old one. The second method involves editing the Windows registry. This is more effective but also quite risky.

However, if you follow the above steps, now you know how to change username in Windows 10 and you will be changing your user folder name in no time at all.

How to reduce computer energy consumption

How to reduce computer energy consumption

Have you been wondering how to reduce computer energy consumption? Throughout this article, we’ll help you save on your energy bill.

Computers are present in every home nowadays. There’s no doubt that around half of our energy consumption is due to the use of digital devices. The electricity that these machines swallow up can make a major difference in your overall power consumption.

If you’re looking to control the power usage of your personal computer, then there are dozens of ways to do so. Each one contributes a certain amount of change in consumption and some might seem insignificant, but remember that drops of water make a mighty ocean.

How to reduce computer energy consumption

In today’s read, we’ll be showing you a list of methods to reduce the energy your PC uses. But before that, we’d like to give you an insight into the root cause of the problem you’re about to deal with.

What consumes the most energy on your PC?

Whether you’re coming tight on electricity bills or just want to contribute to the well-being of the environment, the reason behind your PC’s heavy energy consumption could be anything. Your computer is a complex machine that is designed to help you with your everyday tasks. It is also possible that your PC might be consuming energy when you least expect it.

You’ll have to dive deep into the settings to find out what might be the reason behind this over-consumption. In terms of components, your machine’s microprocessor takes the most energy as compared to the rest of the components.

This, of course, happens due to the microprocessor holding the burden of every ounce of computing that your computer  gets done. By performing billions of calculations within a second, there’s no surprise in the fact that processors require a massive amount of energy to keep things working smoothly.

Now, the rest of the PC’s operations are powered by the processor. If you can minimize the distribution of processing power that a program takes, you can cut off energy consumption to a great extent.

The second component is none other than the GPU itself, which often reaches the processor’s level of energy usage in gaming machines. Well, being a gamer has its perks but it’s hard for PC gamers to get a hold of their electricity bills.

Why you should take measures to control energy consumption

Now, we all know that nobody likes an electricity bill that has skyrocketed above the charts, but is that the only reason to worry about when it comes to energy saving? The answer is no. Another significant reason why you should pay attention to your computer’s power usage is carbon emissions.

So, here’s the thing, the more energy we use, the more carbon is released into our atmosphere. This boosts climate change which is responsible for dangerous natural disasters all over the planet. According to a study at EnerGuide, a computer that runs for around 8 hours/day is responsible for around 175 kg of CO2 emission per year.

Furthermore, computing activities all over the world are responsible for around 2% of total carbon release into the atmosphere. Therefore, we recommend it’s about time you go green. The importance of minimizing energy consumption is backed up by two heavy reasons, electricity costs and carbon footprint.

How much power does your computer consume?

This is a frequently asked question regarding this subject that is often given no importance. Despite being a key reason why you would want to limit energy consumption, the answer to this query is simply too uncertain. Your PC’s energy usage relies upon several factors.

From the type of hardware to the amount of usage, it is quite difficult to come up with a straight answer for this one. Since different users have different uses, the amount of energy being consumed varies a lot.

However, what most people fall for is the “stand-by deception”. As the name suggests, it is a popular belief that having electronic devices on stand-by does not result in the consumption of energy.

On the contrary, they do take up energy, but just 1/3 of what they consume when they’re fully functioning. So, you already know one way of saving energy. We are here to tell you more!

How to reduce computer power consumption

Here are the top methods of minimizing the amount of energy your PC consumes. The sequence of these methods is according to their energy efficiency in getting the job done.

Get rid of external connections

The top causes of additional electricity usage do not actually come from your CPU. Instead, they come from what sits around your computing machine. We’re referring to that printer you leave on after printing your documents, the loudspeaker you leave on after listening to music, and that external webcam that you keep connected.

These external devices can attract loads of power towards themselves and be the cause of high electricity bills.

It is highly recommended that you start by disconnecting these devices and turning them off whenever you don’t plan on using them. As for necessary external devices, such as the mouse and keyboard, keep them connected because they don’t take up much power.

Manage power settings of your PC

Windows gives you a relatively vast range of options to choose from when it comes to power options. Other operating systems offer energy-saving modes as well. You can either turn on these modes or head on down to your power settings and adjust them accordingly.

Windows 10 allows you to set a sleep timer and power consumption to minimize energy usage too. Explore these power saving features on your PC and see how you can take measures to get the most out of your computer without taking up too much energy.

Display options such as shortening the time period until the PC goes to sleep will greatly affect your PC’s overall power expenditure.

Shut down your machine

If you’re one of those who tend to leave their PC hanging for hours, then you have to stop. It doesn’t take more than a minute to save progress. Even if you’re worried about your work getting lost if you shut down, try opting for alternate methods such as sleep or hibernate.

In sleep mode, your PC shuts down the system temporarily. This saves energy and once you turn it back on, it will launch quickly and everything will be as you left it.

As for the hibernate mode, the power consumption is lower than sleep mode. Before going into hibernation, your PC saves its state into the memory and restores it again when you turn it on. This practice takes a while but is highly recommended as an alternative for shutting down.

Ease out on the brightness

The screen brightness levels are one of the major factors in determining the amount of energy your machine uses to function. Your computer monitor might be taking up more electricity than the CPU. This happens when the brightness level is too high.

Not only is that bad for your eyes but it also takes a toll on your electricity usage. A simple reduction of brightness from 100% to 70% can save up around 20% of additional energy. Remember, you don’t want to lower it too much either since it can also harm your eyes. Instead, try to keep moderate levels of brightness.

Lastly, if you’re still using a CRT monitor, upgrade to an LCD monitor right away. LCD screens can save up to 80% of energy as compared to a CRT.

Eliminate background processing

You’d be surprised to see an overview of the computing that goes on even when you’re not using your running PC. Background programs are constantly running and draining power.

Components such as GPU, RAM, HDD all have somewhat of an equal share in assisting background functioning. In most cases, these programs are not even necessary to run at the back of your PC.

So, here’s what you’re going to do. Launch the Task Manager where you’ll find a list of programs that are currently running. You can dismiss them to save power. If you face trouble in eliminating unnecessary background processes, then follow our short set of instructions below.

  • Type “Task Manager” on the Windows Start Menu. Launch the Task Manager application;
  • In the first tab, you’ll find a list of programs currently running on your computer;
  • Right-click on the program you want to dismiss. Click on “End Task” to stop it from running in the background.

How to reduce computer energy consumption

Upgrade your computer’s hardware components

This is one of the most important and efficient methods of minimizing energy consumption. Old hardware components were not designed to hold from draining power. Newer hardware not only gives you an upper hand over saving power, but also give you better performance.

An easy way of finding out which hardware is best for you is to look for the amount of cooling it would need. The more cooling up it needs, the more power it will consume.

Furthermore, you can find hardware components that specialize in giving you good results without taking up too much power. An upgrade from an HDD to an SSD is a fitting example here. This approach has its cons of being heavy on the pocket, but if you’re looking for a long-term solution, then we suggest you start by upgrading your PC’s hardware.

Switch to a laptop computer

When it comes to the factor of energy-saving, mobile computers leave desktop computers way behind in the competition. Laptops usually consume around 20-60 watts of electric power whereas desktop computers can use up to a whopping amount of 120-200 watts.

Although other factors have a role here too, overall, a laptop is the winner if we’re talking about the subject of energy consumption. This is since mobile computers comprise components that are designed to consume less power.

A laptop has to run on a battery; therefore, it makes sense that its components do not drain high levels of power. Laptops even have better power-saving features than a desktop computer.

Use portable devices whenever you can

If you’re the type of person who does everything on your computer, then it’s time to change that. In this age where smartphones and tablets can do pretty much everything your average PC does, consider using portable devices to get stuff done.

This way you’ll be saved from constantly launching your PC to send an email or attend an online class, which will result in less electricity consumption. As we mentioned above, portable devices that run on battery have a far better rate of power consumption as compared to desktop computers. So, you should hop on to your PC only when you really have to.

Change your PC usage habits

Whether you use screensavers or keep your PC running overnight for heavy downloads, you’ll certainly have to change your usage habits. Unless the above-stated ways don’t work out for you, then your best bet is to turn towards the minimal approaches.

Download an energy-saving browser, try avoiding software that uses too much processing power, and always look out for low-wattage alternatives.

All of these small steps taken together can bring big changes. A sudden change of habits might seem to be a burden, that is why we recommend you slowly cut out practices that would play a role in additional energy drainage. You’ll certainly notice a significant change in your bills as well as your PC’s performance.

Wrap Up

Cutting off habits that pose a threat not only to our planet but also to our pocket is the way to go. Before we say goodbye, a pro tip we’d like to give you is to look for computers that comply with Energy Star’s standard power management.

The Energy Star is a symbol that grades computers according to their ability to deliver the maximum output while consuming minimal power.

Besides upgrading your devices and looking for alternate options, you’ll also have to make permanent changes in your daily-life habits. Hopefully, our energy saving tips help you in cutting energy costs and making the planet clean and green again.

How to check RAM and RAM speed on Windows 10

If you’ve been searching for information on how to check RAM and RAM speed on Windows 10, stay with us. We’ll get into that in this article.

“Check the ram of the device before you buy it” – Sounds familiar? We cannot remember the number of times we have come across this advice.

Whenever you buy a smartphone or a computer, it is always advised to look for bigger amounts of RAM. Many of us wonder why it even matters. For all our readers, who have no clue about this, we have got you covered. Today let’s get into what is RAM and why does it make such a big deal.

If you are already familiar with RAM and its functioning, it is completely fine. You can simply skip this portion and jump to the latter part of the article. In this article, we shall be covering how to check RAM on Windows 10

How to check RAM and RAM speed on Windows 10

What is RAM?

The word “RAM” stands for Random Access Memory. It is a short-term system memory that is present in almost every device we own today; be it computers, laptops, or smartphones.

But what does RAM do? In general, RAM can determine the performance of your device. Wondering how does that happen? Let’s see.

RAM is short-term memory storage. All the tasks you perform on a device are backed by RAM. Anything you open or do, all data and information are stored and accessed from RAM.

This storage and quick access capacity allows you to multi-task. For example, writing a document, browsing the Internet, or listening to music; all at the same time.

All these programs and tasks are managed by RAM, all at once. It allows you to juggle between different tasks effortlessly and seamlessly.

Difference between RAM and hard drive

People mostly confuse RAM with a hard drive or SSD. Yes, both are memory storage devices, but both have a different purpose. As mentioned earlier, RAM is short-term memory storage. It keeps data stored only when you are using it.

This means that as soon as your computer is shut down, RAM loses all its data and information. An SSD or your hard disk drive stores data for long-term usage.

All the operating system files, programs, and applications are stored in your hard drive or SSD. On the other hand, RAM allows you to store and process this data as long as you are using it. Let us understand this better with an example.

How does RAM function?

The CPU on a computer behaves just like a human brain. It has two types of memory i.e., short-term memory (RAM) and long-term memory (hard drive).

Now let us assume you open a program or a file, stored in your hard drive.

All the necessary data to open that program is copied temporarily from your hard drive to the RAM. This happens because RAM is quicker to access than the hard drive or even the SSD. As long as the program is running, RAM is being used.

Now if you shut off the program, all the data stored on RAM is lost.

Simply put:

  • All programs and applications are stored on the hard drive;
  • When you open a program, your CPU accesses it from the hard drive;
  • All the data required to open and run that program is copied from the hard drive to RAM;
  • The program accesses this data from RAM as long as you are running it;
  • When you close the program, RAM automatically loses all the data.

This is why the performance of a computer is – almost – directly proportional to the RAM capacity and RAM speed. If you have more RAM, you have a bigger capacity to store more data at the same time. This implies a smooth and fast running of programs on your device.

When your system runs out of RAM, it starts using virtual memory, allocating data to the slower hard-drive, slowing down overall performance immensely.

Now you all must be wondering why your laptop or PC hangs when you play games. The RAM capacity or RAM speed does not match the requirement of the program. RAM requirement is always determined by the kind of programs and applications you use.

Heavier programs like video games and CAD applications demand higher capacity RAM and higher memory speed. Planning for a RAM upgrade? Wait. Before you purchase new RAM, pay attention to the following:

  • Specs (size, type, speed) of your existing RAM;
  • Configuration of your existing operating system and motherboard.

Most computers use Windows 10 these days. Therefore, we are giving you a demonstration on how to check RAM in Windows 10.

How to check RAM on Windows 10

There are several features to look for while buying or checking RAM. These features include:

  • The capacity of RAM (how much storage capacity RAM offers i.e., 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB);
  • Type of RAM (DDR2, DDR3, DDR4);
  • Speed (frequency + CAS latency);
  • The number of RAM slots available in the motherboard.

When we generally talk about RAM, we refer to the size capacity of RAM. A general rule of thumb regarding RAM size is that you should buy a device that has at least 8 GB if you’re using Windows 10.

Now let’s learn how to check RAM (RAM size) on Windows 10:

Using Control Panel

  • Type “Control panel” in the search bar next to Start Menu;
  • A window opens. Click on “System and Security”;

    How to check RAM and RAM speed on Windows 10

How to check RAM by using Task Manager

  • Right-click on Start/Windows;
  • Click “Task Manager”;
  • A window opens. Click on “More details” appearing on the bottom left corner of the window;
  • A new window pops up. From the taskbar, click “Performance”;

  • Click “Memory” on the left pane of the window;

  • This window displays all information of RAM i.e., size, type, frequency, slots used on motherboard, and present memory usage;
  • If you hover your cursor to slots used, a pop-up box will be shown. It tells you the capacity, frequency, and slot on the motherboard for each RAM module.

How to check RAM speed on Windows 10

So far we know all the available methods to check the frequency of RAM. It is written in MHz and indicates the clock speed, but there are more variables to determine the actual RAM speed.

The RAM performance is measured by frequency and CAS latency combined.

What is the RAM frequency

Every read and write command are done on a single cycle. The RAM frequency indicates how many cycles it can perform per second.

For example, 3200 MHz indicates 3.2 billion cycles of reading and writing per second.

Checking RAM frequency using Windows PowerShell

Windows PowerShell is a Windows 10 built-in application. The PowerShell has many features at its disposal, and RAM information is one among those. Let us see how we can use it for this purpose:

  • Go to the search bar next to Start/Windows;
  • Type “windows powershell”;
  • Open Windows PowerShell;
  • Now, as if you’re on the Command Prompt, use the following command:

“get-ciminstance win32_physicalmemory| Format-Table Manufacturer, Banklabel, Configuredclockspeed, Devicelocator, Capacity, Serialnumber -autosize”

  • Just like the Command Prompt, PowerShell also displays RAM specs in column form.

Now we know these methods to check  RAM frequency. But what about CAS latency? Before checking methods to check CAS latency, let’s get to know what it is.

What is RAM CAS latency?

CAS stands for Column Access Strobe latency. It is also referred to as CL. CAS latency indicates the time gap between receiving and processing a command by RAM.

It is mostly represented as 15-17-17-30. This implies the number of clock cycles RAM takes to process a command. Now that we understand what is CL, let us check methods to find it:

Check CL by using CPU-Z

CPU-Z is a third-party application. Not just RAM speed, you can derive all the required necessary RAM information from this app. Let us show you how:

  • Download CPU-Z application from the following link:
  • Install the application by following the given instructions;
  • After successful installation, open CPU-Z;
  • Go to the “Memory tab” from the application window;

  • You can see all the information about your RAM including speed, type, and size.

Check CL by using PiriForm Speccy

Piriform Speccy is another reliable third-party application.

  • Download Piriform Speccy from the following link:
  • Install the application by following the instructions;
  • After successful installation, open the app;

  • Go to the “RAM section” from the left pane of the main window.

The coolest feature about these two applications is that you can download them even on Windows 7 and get all the required information easily.

It is imperative to consider both the factors of Frequency and CL for calculating RAM speed.

CAS latency, as mentioned earlier, determines the time gap between receiving and processing commands.

If your RAM has less CAS latency, it means it can process these commands faster. Consequently, your programs and applications run faster and smoother.

The opposite formula goes for the RAM frequency. A higher frequency indicates a higher transfer of cycles per second. Thus, a higher frequency rate also implies a faster performance of RAM.

Therefore, to calculate RAM speed, do consider frequency and CAS latency. The higher the frequency and lower the latency, the faster the RAM performance.

How much RAM does Windows 10 use?

The question on two factors:

  • Configuration of your operating system;
  • Usage of programs and applications.

4 GB of RAM

If you’re running a 64-bit Windows 10, you can even get away with 2GB RAM. According to Windows 10 specifications, the 32-bit version works with 1 GB RAM and the 64-bit with 2 GB, as minimum requirements. However, these thresholds only account for the installation and basic functioning of the operating system.

The RAM also supports regular tasks we perform like gaming, editing, browsing, etc. Therefore, we must look beyond the operating systems and consider our usage too.

Therefore, we recommend our readers to have 4GB as a minimum RAM threshold. 4GB is easily supported by both 32 and 64-bit OS. However, there is a glitch here. The 32-bit OS is only capable to manage a maximum amount of 4GB of RAM.

8 GB of RAM

The ideal RAM capacity is considered to be 8 GB. With 8 GB of RAM, you can use the full potential of your OS, and the processor to its maximum. You can perform video editing and even a little gaming with this amount of RAM.

16 GB or Plus RAM

If you are an avid gamer then go for 16GB as you’ll have a lot of RAM usage. These are also ideal for photo editing and other rendering programs. Bear in mind that 16 GB or plus RAM capacities are only compatible with 64-bit operating systems.

Wrap Up

After reading all this information, if you are planning to upgrade your RAM memory, go for it. Do lookout for a faster RAM speed combined with a low CAS figure. And don’t forget to buy one that is compatible with your motherboard.

After knowing the true potential of RAM, we can easily say that with the right RAM capacity, your system can go from drab to fab.

We’ll also show you extra tips and tricks to make the most out of this feature. Whether you want to change the icon or the layout, we will cover it all!

Change default folder view in Windows 10

Why some folder icons look different from others?

You might have noticed how folders on your PC do not look all the same. That happens because Windows 10 File Explorer displays folders according to the contents they hold inside them. For example, in a folder full of MP3 files, you’ll find the icon of the folder to be displayed with a musical note.

This depicts that the contents inside the folder are in MP3 format. The benefit you get out of this is the ease of identification. Simply put, Windows 10 makes it easier for you to organize and identify a folder by displaying it as per the nature of the contents that it stores within.

The File Explorer gives you a total of five templates to choose from: General, Documents, Images, Music, and Videos. Usually, when a new folder is created, File Explorer displays it in the General template.

However, when you add content to it, the folder template changes automatically depending on the type of files inside. You can change the default folder template to another one of your preference.

How to change view templates of Folders

Here is a short tutorial on how you can change the view template of a folder:

  • Start by opening the folder you want to change the template view of. Right-click on a blank space and select “Customize this folder”;

Exploring File Explorer’s folder view options

Until now, we have barely tapped the advanced options side in terms of the display of folders in the File Explorer. Now, we will be going through a list of settings that you might have noticed in the previous procedures.

Our readers must understand these additional folder view settings if they want to get the best out of the File Explorer.

Firstly, head on to File Explorer and open the panel through which you reset the folder view in the last set of instructions. Here you’ll find a list of options that are either checked or unchecked.

You can check/uncheck these simple options for better display of files and folders. However, we especially recommend you check/uncheck the following ones:

  • Show hidden files and folders – Windows 10 lets you choose whether you want to see files and folders that might not be of use to you. Unless you’re fine with multiple folders of low opacity icons being displayed in File Explorer, we suggest you keep this option unchecked.
  • Hide protected operating system files – You’ll see that Windows 10 says “Recommended” right beside this option and we suggest you the same as Windows. Only in an extreme scenario where you’re looking for a particular bugged file would you need this option unchecked. Otherwise, this one needs to be kept checked.
  • Use Sharing Wizard – Once again, you’ll find “Recommended” written right next to this option. This Sharing Wizard option configures which libraries and files are to be shared with user accounts. It is advised to leave this option checked.

These are only some of the options out of many others that you get to access through the “View” tab in File Explorer. You can adjust them according to your needs but pay special attention to the options we mentioned above.

How to open File Explorer to Quick Access/My PC

In case you haven’t noticed, whenever you launch the File Explorer, it directs you to the Quick Access section by default.

From this section, you may choose to access your recently as well as frequently used files and folders. However, if you want to access your PC right away after File Explorer launches, there is a way to get that done easily:

  • Open File Explorer and click on “File”, on the top left of the window;

  • Click on “Folder and Search Options”;

Change default folder view in Windows 10

  • The “Folder Options” window will pop up. Here you can see the drop-down menu right at the start. Click on it and choose “This PC”. Then click “Ok”.

You can also set it back to Quick Access if you want. Apart from that, Windows 10 allows you to pin any folder you want in the Quick Access panel. This makes it easier for users to access folders through shortcuts.

Before we finish, we’d like to give you one last pro tip. You might be wondering that the aforementioned procedures seem to be a hurdle since you’ll have to change folder view settings for every folder separately.

However, such is not the case. Fortunately, Windows 10 gives you another relief in the form of an option named “Apply to all folders”. Enabling this means that the changes you’re making will be made to all of the subfolders within the folder in question whenever you’re customizing them.

Do you see the “Apply to all folders” option? That is what you want to click on if you want your changes to be implemented on multiple folders. This applies to all of the procedures mentioned throughout our guide.

Wrap Up

As you can see, there are plenty of ways in which you can modify the folders all thanks to the Windows 10 operating system. Accordingly, Windows 10 has given you dozens of personalization options to choose from just so you can organize your folders exactly the way you want them to.

The purpose of this guide was to show you different methods of achieving different results related to folder view customization. Now that you’ve scrolled all the way down here to our conclusion, we hope you leave with a high level of proficiency in folder modification and organization!

Aquí encontrarás varias pestañas, deberás dirigirte a Boot o Arranque.

Windows comenzará a instalarse.

How to put programs to sleep in Windows 10

How to put programs to sleep in Windows

Wondering how to put programs to sleep in Windows 10 computer? Search no more! We’ll be focusing on that all through this article.

After long periods of use, your computer is likely to feel slow at some point or run out of battery juice faster. If it is not a battery problem, it could be happening because you are running too many applications in the background.

Windows 10 operating system is set up in a way that applications keep running in the background so that if you ever need to open them again, those apps will have a fast startup, popping up within seconds.

Other reasons why applications run in the background include giving your computer the ability to make use of additional features such as downloading important data, showing up-to-date notifications, and updating Live Tiles.

While these features are essential and can be useful in many ways, a background app (whether you started it or not) can clog system resources, drain your battery and sap your bandwidth.

Luckily, you can do without those apps running in the background by making changes in settings and put them in sleep mode. If you thought that those changes might require you to uninstall some programs, you don’t need to worry about that.

What you simply have to do is put some of those background apps to sleep, and you will be freeing up the device resources used up by those programs. This guide shows you detailed steps on how you can put programs to sleep on Windows 10.

How to put programs to sleep in Windows 10

Put programs to sleep using Privacy Settings

  • Hover your mouse to the Windows Start button icon to access the Start Menu. . Right-click on it and click on “Settings”;
  • In the resulting window, locate “Privacy” from the options and click it;

Put programs to sleep on Windows 10 using System Settings

Using System Settings, you can put programs to sleep or prevent apps from running in the background by turning on the Battery Saver mode.

Although this option usually turns on automatically once the battery power level is less than 20 percent, you can manually turn it on whenever you want.

Follow the steps below:

  • Open Settings and click on “System”;

How to put programs to sleep in Windows 10

  • Click on “Battery”, and on the right, locate “Battery Saver”;

How to put programs to sleep in Windows 10

  • Under the battery saver slider, use the toggle switch to turn off: “Battery saver status until next charge”. This will turn on the battery saver.

Once you do this, your apps will no longer run in the background.

NOTE: These steps only work for applications that you got from the Microsoft Store. Programs outside the store will need to be put to sleep manually and be stopped from running at startup.

How do desktop apps come into play? Can I put them to sleep too?

Your traditional Windows desktop apps are not controlled by the settings highlighted above. They only work with the new mobile-style universal apps on Windows 10, which are also known as “Metro apps” on Windows 8.

If you want to stop desktop apps from running in the background, the best way to do it is to close desktop applications when they are not in use.

Also, check that applications aren’t hiding in your notification area and running in the background. Go to “Task Manager” and click on the “Startup” tab to view all the applications you have running. You can disable any app you don’t need.

Wrap Up

Saving system resources on your computer let you work more efficiently, and your machine runs smoother too. If you have to apply the sleep setting to some programs to achieve that, then so be it.

We hope that the steps highlighted above have shown you some of the best methods on how to put programs to sleep Windows 10. Which one worked for you? Do you have any other suggestions? Do let us know in the comments.

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

How to set a program to high priority in Windows

Throughout this article, we’ll show you how to set a program to high priority in Windows 10. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? When the PC is running multiple programs at once and fails to execute the task at hand. This freeze usually happens when the background programs take too much of the computer’s processing power.

Simply put, your PC fails to realize that your calculation in Excel is far more important than the files getting moved in the background. Well, we haven’t yet progressed this much in terms of technology that a computer would somehow know which exact application has more importance, but there are some considerable solutions.

In this scenario, your best bet is to set the priority of a program to a higher level.

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

We all know that machines execute computing tasks with the help of the processor. Setting a program’s priority and increasing it allows the PC to give more processing power to a particular app. On the other hand when you decrease the priority, your PC limits the processing power being consumed by that application.

Now, learning how to set a priority of a program can be quite handy for a Windows 10 user. That is exactly what we are going to be focusing on today.

The best part about changing the priority of a certain application is that it is temporary. The changes you make only last until you turn off your PC. After it turns back on, you can expect the priority settings for every program to be back on default.

This saves you from the trouble of making things back to normal after every time your prioritized computing is over with. Now, before we start our tutorial, let’s give you an overview of the grades in priority settings.

Priority levels in Windows 10 programs

You’ll find the below six priority levels in Windows 10:

  1. Realtime
  2. High
  3. Above Normal
  4. Normal
  5. Below Normal
  6. Low

Currently, your PC is running every program on the Normal priority level. At this level, the processing power is being equally distributed between the multiple programs.

However, if you wish, you can modify this distribution and choose certain programs to consume more/less processing power, thus having a lower priority and lower CPU usage (lower processor resources) for a temporary time period or even permanently if that’s your choice.

Ideal priority level

Now, with so many priority levels, your eyes must be set on the top one: the Realtime priority. Don’t be too surprised if we tell you that this is the only priority level that must be warned against.

Users often tend to make the mistake of putting their programs on Realtime priority at the wrong time which leads to the PC giving 100% processing power to a single program.

Sounds cool but this is not exactly the best way to distribute processing power. Setting such a high priority level can cause errors in your computer’s operation and some rare cases even cause your keyboard or mouse to stop working!

Therefore, before setting this level, we advise you to find out whether Realtime is safe for your computer and software, or not.

When changing priority, you have other levels such as Above Normal or High to choose from. You can set any of these as long as you know that all of your system’s processing power is not taken up by a single program. Other than this safety precaution, you’re all good to go.

Changing priority settings through Task Manager

There are several ways to set priorities straight on Windows 10. We’ll start with the simplest method in our tutorial which is also the best one for getting this done.

  • To start, click on the Start button on the far bottom left by default. Once the Start Menu opens up, type “Task Manager”. Then open the Task Manager that shows up on the side;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • Now you’ll find a “More Details” option on the bottom left in the Task Manager window. Click there;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • Here you’ll notice several tabs on the top, starting from “Processes tab”. Look for the second-last tab: “Details”. Click on it;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • Now you’ll find the list of programs running on your PC. Select your desired program by right-clicking on it. Choose the “Set Priority” option;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • A small menu will open on the side through which you can change the priority level of that program. Click on the preferred priority level;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • A confirmation dialog box will pop up from Windows 10. Click on “Change Priority” to authenticate your decision.

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

After this process, the chosen program will have a higher priority level and you’ll find it to be performing better than before. You can do the same for irrelevant programs and set them on a low priority whenever you want more processing power left for more important others.

This is the easiest and most popular way to change a program’s priority level. However, there are other ways to get this done as well. Let us show you guys another method.

Changing priority levels through Command Prompt

In this set of instructions, we’ll be showing you a command-based method of opening a program right before its priority level. Follow the instructions given below.

  • Just like in the previous method, head on down to the Windows Start Menu and type “Command Prompt”. Access the Command Prompt by clicking the “Open” button.

  • Once the Command Line launches, simply type or paste the command below:

start “” /AboveNormal “C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

Note: You can change the highlighted words in the command as you desire. The AboveNormal represents the priority level while the notepad.exe represents the program name. For example, you can change it to High and msword.exe to launch MS Word at a high priority level.

  • Simply hit the “Enter” button after typing the command and watch your chosen program launch in your desired priority level.

Changing priority levels of a running program through Command Prompt

Unless you’re okay with copy-pasting or typing commands, you’ll surely find the first method to be better. In case you have a program opened and do not want to re-launch it all over again after changing its priority level, there is a way out for you.

You can change the priority level of a running program through Command Prompt too. Here’s how you can do that.

While your desired app is already running, launch the Command Prompt the same way we showed you previously. Paste the following command there:

wmic process where name=”ProcessName” CALL setpriority “PriorityLevelName”

Now, substitute “Process Name” with the name of the running program you want to set the priority levels of (e.g msword.exe). Secondly, change “PriorityLevelName” with your desired priority level. After you do this, the command will look something like this:

wmic process where name=”mspaint.exe” CALL setpriority “Above Normal

Hit enter and voila! Your already running program will now run on the priority level you’ve set. Through this trick, you won’t have to exit the program to change the priority settings and lose progress.

Now, we planned to give you a guide that would be more than enough for you to learn everything about setting priority levels. Furthermore, if you’re tired of having to do everything by yourself then this next method is for you.

Changing priority levels of a program permanently

Yep, you read that right. It is possible to permanently change the priority levels of a specific program on Windows 10 as well. Unfortunately, you’ll have to go for third-party software to get this done since Windows 10 does not have any built-in feature that allows you to enable permanent changes in terms of priority levels.

You can find dozens of such programs that are supported by Windows 10. The most popular and preferred program for this job is Prio (Process Priority Saver).

Prio is a well-known solution to change the priority levels of a program permanently. The best thing is that it simply aligns itself with your task manager. This means that it is not an entire program of its own, instead, it is more like a simple plug-in that takes no more than 1MB of your storage.

After you download it from here, install it by following the straightforward step-by-step instructions displayed by the installer.

Once the installation is complete, restart your PC and then repeat the task manager method of changing priority settings. This time after you right-click on a specific program, you’ll find a “Save Priority” option. Checking on it will lead to a permanent change in the new priority settings.

To summarize, all you have to do is install the program and change your priority level settings like you normally do. The only difference is that now you’ll be given the option to make your changes permanent.

Setting CPU priority through the Control Panel

Tired of your running programs getting affected by the background processing? We’ve got your back. Before we wrap up, here is a quick last tutorial of how you can make Windows 10 give priority to foreground programs.

This method is a bit different than what we did before, especially since it does not involve changing the priority levels specifically.

  • Open the Control Panel by searching for it in the Start Menu;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • Click on the “System and Security” option displayed on the first position;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • Select the “System” option;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • You’ll find the “Advanced System Settings” in blue font on the side panel here. Click on it;

  • System Properties will open in a Window. Click on the “Advanced” tab and then on “Settings”;

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

  • The Performance Options will be shown on your screen. Click on the “Advanced” tab once again;

  • Under “Adjust for best performance of:”, you’ll find two options: Programs and Background services. You have to check the “Programs” option. Click “Ok” to save your changes.

How to set a program to high priority in Windows 10

After this, you’ll find your system giving importance to the programs you’re working on instead of the computation that is happening in the background, wasting precious system resources.

Wrap Up

At this point, you can tell that changing priority levels is no big deal. Other methods give you the same result such as making changes in the Windows Registry. The registry method in particular is complex and risky whereas the above-mentioned list of methods is straightforward and easy.

Furthermore, we suggest you only make these changes when you have to. Your computer’s processing power is equally distributed to every program that is running on it. Accordingly, constant changes and disruptions might lead to issues in your PC’s stability.

Therefore, you should refrain from changing app priority levels to either too high or too low. Keep the balance maintained and you’ll find your system properly focusing on the task at hand instead of what’s cooking in the back.

That is all for today, now you know how to set a program to high priority Windows 10! If you found this article helpful, feel free to share it with your friends and family.

How to sort folders by size in Windows 10

How to sort folders by size in Windows

Stay in this article if you have been wondering how to sort folders by size in Windows 10. We store a ton of files on our computers. From images and videos to documents and music, computers provide a great way to keep everything organized.

On Windows 10, as you would expect, you can store files, organize them into folders, search a particular file, sort files according to various filters, and a lot more.

However, there is one limitation that just doesn’t seem right: if you want to sort folders by size, Windows 10 mysteriously does not allow that.

While you can sort files by size, you can’t do the same with folders. Many people have tried to make sense of why this is not allowed but to no avail. Regardless, there are many ways you can bypass this limitation. Usually, people go for third-party software that allows you to sort folders by size Windows 10.

This can come in handy in several scenarios. If you want to find a particular folder that has been clogging up your disk space, you can do that using this feature.

It is also useful when you are looking for a particular large folder where you usually keep all your large files but you can’t seem to remember its name. There are many more such scenarios where this simple feature could be a life-saver.

So, since Windows operating system does not give you the tools, let us take a look at some nice software that allows you to do it.

How to sort folders by size in Windows 10

Folder Size by MindGems

Folder Size by MindGems is a great freeware that first performs a scan of your hard drive and then tells you the respective file size and folder size of all the files and folders on your computer. The scan happens really quickly thanks to the highly advanced scan algorithm.

This app also displays the total sizes as a percentage of the overall hard disk space. It does so through pie charts, bar charts, and so on. It gives you an idea of how much space you have, what files are eating up most of it, your file system structure, and if necessary, how you can clean them up.

If you had been looking for the perfect solution to sort folders by folder size, this is it. It provides you with a report that you can sort to identify the largest files and largest folder.

What’s great about this software is that it also scans the size of every single subfolder on your computer. This does away with the limitation that Windows 10’s native File Explorer has.

The list of features doesn’t end there. Folder Size can also scan virtually all types of files. This includes any hidden file, temporary files, cache files, the system volume information folder, etc. Makes it a very valuable tool even if your purpose is to just perform a disk cleanup.

What’s more, you can even export the file and folder size into a CSV file. This can be helpful if you are working in a team or trying to troubleshoot a problem using a professional’s help.

Now, let’s look at the steps required to download and install this piece of software on your computer:

  • First, access Google and type in “Folder Size by MindGems”;
  • Then, click on the first link that pops up (shown in the image below);

This is our second choice to sort folders by their size. It is one of the most compatible pieces of software that you’ll ever see as it supports even Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 2000!

Also, as with “Folder Size” previously reviewed, GetFolderSize is freeware too, meaning that you don’t have to pay anything to download, install, and enjoy its plethora of uses.

Once installed, this software quickly scans your hard disk with its cutting-edge scan algorithm. When it is done, it lists out all the folders on your computer along with their folder size. This list of the folder size can be downloaded as a text or CSV file.

Again, this can be quite useful at times. So, in that way, it provides a different file explorer experience than the one Windows 10 offers. It essentially shatters the limitation that we talked about above.

You can also perform basic disk cleanup using this software. It provides buttons and shortcuts (like the delete icon) to delete a file or folder. You can check out the rest of the menu for different actions.

Now, let’s take a look at the steps to download and install GetFolderSize on your computer:

  • To start access Google and type in “GetFolderSize”;
  • Then, click on the first link that pops up (shown in the image below);

SpaceSniffer is a great software that has a unique take on how it displays the folders on your computer. Like the other two apps mentioned above, SpaceSniffer is also freeware.

You can download it for free or choose to donate to the project. Once you install it and it starts scanning any drive of your choice, you will immediately realize how different it is from the other applications.

It graphically shows the folders that are taking more space. The larger the folder, the bigger its “square representation” is. As it is scanning, you will see the folders being arranged automatically.

So, you can say that it doesn’t sort by size in a conventional way, you can still figure out which folders are taking up a lot of space on your computer.

Now let’s dive into the steps required to download and install SpaceSniffer on your computer:

Wrap Up

While sorting files and finding any large file is extremely easy in Windows 10, things get tricky when you want to proceed the same way with folders. When you open File Explorer and try to sort folders by size, you will find that option is not available.

This can get quite frustrating if you quickly want to figure out which folders in your computer are eating up most of the disk space. Ideally, this feature should come as a default in all Windows 10 computers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

That’s where third-party software comes in. These allow you to sort your folders by size by scanning any particular drive or large folder. Doing so can save a lot of time and effort. Although there are many options available, there are three tools of our preference.

These are Folder Size, GetFolderSize, and SpaceSniffer. These simple programs offer all the features that you could possibly need in a file explorer. In addition to helping you see the file type and file names, they work equally well with folders and their sizes.

Also, since these are freeware, there is no need to second guess and you can simply start using them whenever you feel the need.
