How to change the name on my computer

Years ago, before Windows 10 was released, it was a challenging task to change your computer’s name. However, Windows 10 has simplified things by making this change possible from your Windows 10 PC Settings menu.

Change the name of your computer using Windows Settings

You can easily change the name of your computer to anything you want from your computer’s Settings. Follow the steps below;

  • STEP 1: Press Windows key and launch the Settings app window by clicking the gear icon;
  • STEP 2: Click on “System“;

  • STEP 4: Under Device Specifications, you’ll see your device’s name and other details. You’ll also see the “Rename this PC” option to change the name of your computer. Click “Rename this PC“;

 

  • STEP 5:  Enter the new name you want for your computer, and you will be prompted to restart your Windows 10 computer. You either have to do it right away or later so that the changes can take effect.

 

The next time and whenever you restart your Windows computer, the new name will take effect.

Change your computer’s name using Control Panel

Going through Control Panel is another method you can use to change computer name, especially if your machine is running on an older version of Windows like Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system.

This used to be the default method before Windows 10 was released, but it still works, and you can try it out by following the steps below:

  • STEP 1: Click on the Start Button and then the search icon. Enter the words “Control panel” in the search box;

 

  • STEP 2:  Open Control Panel and navigate to “System“;

 

  • STEP 3: Locate Advanced System Settings on the screen and click on it;

 

  • STEP 4: Navigate to the “Computer Name tab“;

 

  • STEP 5: Click on the “Change button” next to “To rename the computer or change its domain or workgroup, click Change“;

 

  • STEP 6: Enter the new name in the textbox beneath “Computer name” and click the “OK button“;

 

  • STEP 7: Once you click on “OK” you will get a pop-up informing you to restart your computer to apply these changes;

 

  • STEP 8: After clicking “OK” your Windows computer will restart immediately.
